The Success Story

The Background

One student approached us with a dream score in mind after an initial decent attempt at the USMLE Step 1.

First Attempt In their Step 1, they dedicated around 6 weeks, studying intensely for up to 13 hours daily. Although they reached a satisfactory score, the experience was exhausting.

Second Attempt For the Step 2 CK, they decided on a 6-week dedicated period. Despite starting after a grueling rotation, they shifted their strategy, which we’ll delve into next.

Study Strategies That Worked

UWorld Approach While they covered the entire UWorld Step 2 bank during rotations, they tackled it again, answering 170 questions daily. Instead of reviewing every question, they focused on mistakes, optimizing time in tutor mode.

Role of Practice Tests Practice tests were invaluable. They completed NBMEs 7-12, UWSA 1 & 2, and the Free 130, spacing them out to prevent fatigue.

Lessons Learned

Avoiding Burnout Unlike their Step 1, they prioritized well-being during Step 2 preparation. This change underscored the importance of mental health in achieving optimal scores.

Effective Note Taking Diligently taking notes during UWorld practice and revisiting them proved beneficial. They emphasized the value of reviewing notes before the exam.

Additional Resources

Anki & AMBOSS While our student wasn’t an Anki enthusiast, many find it beneficial. They briefly used AMBOSS, considering it a supplementary tool, but not a UWorld substitute.

Building Stamina The USMLE can be taxing. Preparing with 170 questions daily helped in building endurance. However, ensuring proper sleep, nutritious meals, and regular breaks is vital. And yes, for many, caffeine becomes a close friend.

Concluding Thoughts

Our successful student's journey highlights the need for strategy, resilience, and adaptability. While individual experiences vary, the right resources and mindset can turn aspirations into reality. At MedBoardTutors, we’re committed to helping you navigate this journey.
